oneir0nautics is an ongoing public art project exploring dreams and their relationships to everyday life.

Whether we remember our dreams or not, we all have wild mysterious experiences in our sleep. How do these nightly travels through other realms nuance or even directly affect our waking moods, decisions, and interactions for days, even years to come? How do dreams vary, or not, from culture to culture? What can we learn from and about each other through dreams?

In 1953, Calvin S. Hall wrote, “A dream is a work of art which requires of the dreamer no particular talent, special training, or technical competence. Dreaming is a creative enterprise in which all may and most do participate.”  Bert O. States, a literary critic and professor at UC Santa Barbara, elaborates that the creation of dreams and creation of art “involve the same or highly similar mental processes (the production of images and narratives based on human experience).” In this light, how might tuning into our dreaming lives help us understand and exercise our biological capacities for creative, divergent, expansive thinking?

In addition to collecting dreams from members of the public and tagging them geographically, oneir0nautics is an artistic investigation of the interaction between solitary nighttime dreams and collective daytime realities. Images, concepts, gestures, moods, and occasionally full events from dreams submitted online take form in a variety of mediums and are folded into performance-based ”happenings” in different public spaces internationally. Each iteration builds on the last, reflecting the residual dream fragments that accumulate in our minds and color our experiences, consciously or not, as we go about our days. The ongoing collection and layering of individual dream worlds creates one larger shared dream world, inviting us to reexamine our perception of reality and the fluid dimensions through which we experience it. These happenings also provide platforms for research, conversation, workshops, and other explorations of dreams from all angles.

At any time, you are invited to submit your own dreams to be woven into rolling iterations of the project. You can also take part in the creative manifestation of dreams; click on participate to find out how.
